BALTWRECK
Preventing massive marine waters chemical pollution from the leaking wrecks and munition/ weapon dumps in the South Baltic
- Duration: 07/2024–06/2027
- Programme: Interreg South Baltic Programme 2021–2027
- Total budget: 3 830 285,76 €
- Funding from European Regional Development Fund (ERDF): 3 064 228,60 €
Objective
The objective of the BALTWRECK project is to contribute to reducing the level of pollution of the Baltic Sea by oil waste, weapons, ammunition and other wreck residues. This is to be achieved through the joint development of wreck management methods and their implementation.
Expected Results
State-of-the-art wreck diagnostics
Implementing advanced testing methods to accurately assess the condition of wrecks, identify environmental risks, and support remediation decisions.
Innovative remediation technologies
Development and verification of solutions to safely neutralize fuels, ammunition and explosives in wrecks, including in-situ methods that minimize risks to ecosystems.
Field Verification
Testing the technologies at three selected pilot sites to assess their effectiveness and applicability to other locations.
Ecological Hazard Analysis
Comprehensive assessment of the toxicological impact of munitions dumps and hydrocarbon-contaminated sediments on marine ecosystems.
Recommendations for decision-makers
Development of practical guidelines for maritime-related authorities and institutions, including optimal management strategies, proposals for legal changes, and measures to protect the marine environment.
